PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
The performing arts program at Redding Adventist Academy has engaged drama and music students in an annual Broadway musical since 2002. Be all accounts these productions measure up to the highest standards of high school and community theater.
The quality of this production is due in large measure to the emphasis at RAA on music and the interest many students have in participating in musical productions. Both the music and drama instructors have had professional-level experience in their fields.
While music classes are entirely elective at the Academy level (grades 9-12), few choose not to participate. Music instructor Debbie Alexander attributes this to the special interaction generated between students in this type of endeavor. In her words, "making good music is very bonding."
Recent musicals produced include "The Mikado," "The Music Man," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," and "My Fair Lady." This year RAA will stage "The Pirates of Penzance ," a comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan."
Grades K-6 also produce a Christian musical each year. a recent production was "Acorns to Oaks" a fable that dramatized little habits that can trip up kids.
RAA offers students many venues to develop their musical abilities. Courses include choral work, band, and handbells. The caliber of accomplishment among RAA students has produced a number of high-level opportunities.
In 2005 the RAA Academy Choir performed at Carnegie Hall with four other school choirs from across the country. RAA's invitation came as a result of the choir's participation in a festival that featured 14 school choirs from California. The festival was judged by one of Carnegie's guest conductors, Randy Pagel. Maestro Pagel commended the RAA Academy Choir for its outstanding men's section and recommended that the choir join him in New York for further study and the concert. The RAA Choir performed in concert with the New England Symphonic Ensemble.
