RAA Athletic Program

runnersSports are a high point of campus life at RAA. Students look forward to competing in basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, and flag football. RAA, which is CIF-affiliated, encourages athletic development and sportsmanlike conduct through participation in a number of leagues and tournament competitions.

RAA has varsity, junior varsity, junior high (grades 7 and 8) and elementary (grades 5 and 6) basketball programs for boys and girls. The 2007 girls varsity team made the playoffs for the first time in the school’s history.

Despite the relatively small size of RAA, students have made a name for the school in cross country competition. In 2004 -- only three years into the school’s program -- RAA’s boys cross country varsity team finished in the top ten in sectional competition earning them a spot at the state finals. In 2005 the team finished in ninth place of sectional competition. As a lower division school, RAA is one of the smallest schools competing, making this accomplishment no minor feat. In 2005 RAA prevailed over six higher division schools with much larger student bodies putting the team’s top ten victory into even greater perspective. In 2006 both the boys and girls cross country team were league champions.

RAA students also stand out in track and field events. In 2006 the boys team took the league championship comprised of ten individual championships. Coach Paul Turk said, “Almost every student qualified for each event they tried for. The one who didn’t still exceeded his personal best. The athletes broke just about every school record in the boys division this year. Turk continues, “It doesn’t surprise me that our kids are this good, but that a team the size of ours can beat teams from much larger schools.”

Because RAA is a smaller school, all students have the opportunity to participate in team play. RAA Sports Director Tyler Anderson says, "if you come to RAA, you're going to make the team. You're going to get the opportunity to play, and play all sports."

RAA also supports an elementary cross country program (kindergarten through eighth grade) that has produced champions in the City of Redding league, at the City Meet and at the West Valley Co-ed Meet.

RAA's ski program is the only one in Redding that is school-wide, including kindergarten. The program consists of several ski days a year at Mt. Shasta.
