Sports are a high point of campus life at RAA. Students look forward to competing in basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track and field. RAA, which is CIF-affiliated, encourages athletic development and sportsmanlike conduct through participation in a number of leagues and tournament competitions.

RAA has varsity, junior high (grades 7 and 8) and elementary (grades 4-6) basketball programs for boys and girls. There is also a girls junior varsity basketball team. In cross country RAA students compete at the varsity, junior high, and elementary levels. Track and field is a varsity sport. High school girls and junior high students compete in volleyball.

Despite the relatively small size of RAA, students have made a name for themselves in cross country and volleyball. In 2008 the varsity boys cross country team won its division and topped its Top Ten performances of the previous four years by placing fifth in sectional competition. (The Northern California Section includes nearly all public and private schools north of Sacramento.) The junior high girls volleyball team won the league championship and the final tournament in 2007 and 2008. The team was undefeated in 2008.

RAA’s boys varsity basketball team had its best season ever in 2009 (13-10) placing 7th in their league and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time. In a remarkable feat for a small school, RAA had the leading boy and girl scorer and blocker in the North Valley league at the varsity level. Girls varsity also had the leading stealer. The 2009 junior high girls basketball team was undefeated.

RAA’s Athletic Director Tammy Turk articulates the school’s athletic philosophy: “We encourage students to participate in individual and team sports where they have an opportunity to develop their skills. Our emphasis is on teamwork, cooperation, and skills, but the program focus is on building character. It’s great to be on a winning team, but character development is our main goal.”

RAA’s elementary cross country program has produced champions in the City of Redding league, at the City Meet and at the West Valley Coed Meet. The Junior High boys cross country team won it’s league championship in 2007. RAA has had many individual championships in track and field and a league championship in 2006.

RAA’s ski program is the only one in Redding that is school-wide, including kindergarten. The recreational program consists of several ski days a year at Mt. Shasta.
